![]() ![]() above removed all his gun and driving games "for example". That's why I said "for example" in my question. You know what else I'm nuking off of my ROM collection to save room on the hard drive? Every stinking variation of draw poker. You, by contrast, literally called me "xenophobic". I am saddened to hear if this is true, as that is entirely against the spirit of the MAME project. That's because (who sounds like he is a MAME dev, which I highly respect) is associating my comment with a larger issue of calls to remove portions of the MAME code that emulate these games, which I am NOT in favor of and is only tangentially related to my post. the games have also been blamed for other things people don't like about MAME, people saying, as if it were fact, that Mahjong games are the reason MAME is getting slower, because they bloat MAME or whatever when really nothing of the sort is going on if anything they're beneficial to the emulation of other things because like every single other thing MAME emulates they are providing evidence and use cases for the code that makes up MAME, testing our CPU cores, peripheral emulations etc. It's also a source of frustration, because we've had over the years a lot of hate directed in our direction for working on the emulation of them, people insisting that we're wasting our time, telling us that we need to work on something else instead instead of 'ruining' MAME with this content. ![]() We also see people shipping builds with support for things removed completely as if the work done on emulating them was somehow worthless, and they are not worthy of being in MAME, just because there is some kind of cultural barrier, so yes, it comes across very much as xenophobia, because they're doing no actual harm by being supported in the builds. Yes, it can be a sore subject with MAME developers, because we've seen people trying to raise funds to DESTROY mahjong games so that they don't end up in MAME before and people celebrating at pictures of such games being destroyed while mourning over others. You might find somebody who likes them, yet you're not even giving them a chance. There are reasons people collect them like any other genre, and have favourites like any other genre. The game must follow the basic rules of Mahjong, but everything else that is built around it (special features, AI, custom rules etc.) is going to be unique to that specific game. The reality is 'mahjong game' just gives a template, like the other examples. You could argue that Mario and Sonic are the same game reskinned, because in both cases you jump on platforms and jump on enemies while collecting various powerups that give you abilities and a chance to not die all while trying to beat a timer to maximize your bonus score.Īll single-screen platform games are Bubble Bobble? you clear the screen of enemies using the attacks you've been given and move on to the next screen. because the basic idea is the same 2 characters using a mixture of melee and ranged combat against either other until one runs out of health or the timer expires. Fighters, that Street Fighter is the same game as Fatal Fury, is the same game as Marvel Vs. You could, if you weren't into the genre say the same thing about Vs. now people have taken the time to understand them better they've realised this isn't the case. This is the same argument that was used for quite a few years when it came to vertical shmups, people said they were all the same game, just with different graphics, and emulating them was pointless. r/pinball - Pinball specific discussion.īut like most sources of hate the root of a lot of the problem here comes from ignorance. r/arcade - Original CoinOP Arcade specific discussion. r/RetroGamingNetwork - a multireddit for retro gaming! r/HyperSpin - HyperSpin specific discussion. R/MAME RULES/REGULATIONS REDDIT'S ARCADE COMMUNITY Over time, MAME (originally stood for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) absorbed the sister-project MESS (Multi Emulator Super System), so MAME now documents a wide variety of (mostly vintage) computers, video game consoles and calculators, in addition to the arcade video games that were its initial focus. The fact that the software is usable serves primarily to validate the accuracy of the documentation (how else can you prove that you have recreated the hardware faithfully?). The source code to MAME serves as this documentation. ![]() This is achieved by documenting the hardware and how it functions. As electronic technology continues to rush forward, MAME prevents this important "vintage" software from being lost and forgotten. MAME’s purpose is to preserve decades of software history. MAME is a multi-purpose emulation framework. Questions? Please check out OUR MAME/BYOAC Wiki! ![]()
